Security Systems FAQ

Here are some of the more common security systems questions we get:

What makes up a home security system?
Typical components include a control panel, keypad, transformer, standby batter, motion detector, siren, contacts and phone jack.

How do I find out what kind of security system I have?
Identify the manufacturer, and then look for the control panel. The inside of the door should have a drawing describing the system, including model number and other information.

What does it mean if my system is locked?
It means the panel can no longer accept onsite or offsite programming by anyone aside from the installing company. This is done usually in rented or leased properties.

What is a ‘zone’?
A zone refers usually to the input from a protective circuit from the alarm control panel, which divides your system into separate areas of protection based on function.

When should an alarm system be upgraded?
Systems have a lifespan of usually 10-15 years, and some can last a little longer.
